The secret algorithm of freelancing (hint: it’s human)

Hi Reader,

Happy Friday!

This newsletter is coming to you from Marrakesh, where I've spent the last week working and playing with Happy Freelancers.

I'm always so inspired by these trips and love hanging out with fellow freelancers where we can chat shop, rant, and enjoy good food and good times together.

Also, just a quick reminder that I'm closing the doors to Pitch & Prosper for good on Sunday -- this go round includes a month-long pitching challenge so we can end the year strong. Join us?!

Get £50 and join us now before the doors close on Oct 12th.

P.S. This week on Instagram, I shared how much I made as a freelance writer in September. See the numbers here. And don't forget to give me a follow for regular tips and tricks!

Here's what I've been up to this week work-wise:

👉 I wrote 2 pieces for clients (and influencer marketing tool and an SMS marketing platform)

👉 I refreshed 1 piece for Shopify

👉 I ran edits on 2 pieces for Klaviyo

👉 I ate my weight in delicious Moroccan food and explore a brand new country

⏱ Approx hours spent on client work this week: ~12

⏱ Approx hours spent on non-client work: ~2

💰 Total revenue this week: £2,350

Friday Freelance Tip ✨

I'm REALLY not good at maths.

Well... I actually got an A at GCSE, but that's because it's the only subject I revised for after my teacher predicted me a C (apparently I love to prove people wrong, who knew).

But there's an equation that I've absolutely built my freelance career on:

The more people you know → the more conversations you have → the more opportunities you create → the more work you’ll get.

A.k.a. the law of momentum, babyyyy.

When you’re freelancing, relationships are the algorithm. The more people who know who you are and what you do, the easier everything becomes, from getting clients and staying booked to finding collaborations and landing dream projects.

Buuuuut making connections is only the first step in "networking". I want to talk more about the compounding effect of getting to know more people.

Every person you meet expands your reach. Makes sense, right? Each person comes with their own web of contacts, clients, friends, and opportunities.

So, when you build one meaningful relationship, you’re not adding a single point to your network, you’re actually adding hundreds of invisible threads that might connect you to future clients, collaborators, and advocates.

This is precisely how momentum builds quietly behind the scenes.

And you can imagine just how much momentum builds over 12 years. Obviously, it doesn't feel like much when you're only one or two months in, but months down the line, you'll start to see it all adding up.

When people say “it’s who you know,” this is kind of what they mean, but in freelancing, it’s also “WHO knows you.” (and also... HOW MANY people know you).

So that's the first part of the equation.

Once you start building connections, your job then goes from meeting new people to nurturing existing ones. But both of these things kind of need to happen at the same time if you want to keep growing your existing network (although it does become easier the bigger your network gets, because obviously people recommend you and do the "marketing" bit for you).

Problem is, most freelancers stop at the first step and then don't nurture the relationships they've built (which is obviously v important when you have a network that's, what, 12 years old?!).

There are a few ways you can do this that don't feel particularly salesy (although as freelancers we DO need to sell ourselves sometimes).

Stay visible. Share what you’re working on, what you’ve learned, or what you’re curious about. Don’t overthink it. People remember what they see often, and staying visible keeps you relevant without needing to pitch constantly.

Be generous. Recommend other freelancers, share useful tools, tag people in opportunities. The more value you create within your network, the more your name becomes associated with helpfulness and trust.

Check in with no agenda. Drop a quick message: “Hey, how’s that launch going?” or “Saw your post, loved that insight!” You’re not asking for work, you’re reminding people you exist in a warm, genuine way.

Create touchpoints. You can make connection a habit. Set a reminder to reconnect with five people a month, maybe by commenting on posts from clients or peers you admire.

P.S. this is the system I teach in Pitch & Prosper... last chance to get in on the final cohort ever!! Join us here.

I know a lot of people say freelancing is a numbers game, but really it's a relationship game.

If you zoom out far enough, success within freelancing is a lot about being known, liked, and remembered by more people over time.

So if things are quiet right now, don’t panic. There's still time to build your network and grow the number of people who know you and trust you. Even if you meet 5 people this month and 5 people next month, that's 10 people altogether, so imagine how quickly that can grow over time.

We need more Freelance Money Diaries entries! I'm forever grateful to anyone who shares their finances with us (you can do it totally anonymously!).

As always, happy freelancing :)

Hi Reader, Happy Friday! I've been holding the first set of mentoring calls this week and it has been so fun helping others figure out how to get out of a rut and build businesses they love. I'm also running the month-long pitching challenge as part of the final cohort of Pitch & Prosper next week which I'm super excited about because I'll also be joining in. Stayed tuned for an update on how that goes. P.S. This week on Instagram, I shared a little activity you can do to figure out who your...

Hi Reader, Happy Friday! Can we believe it's October?! Not quite sure how that happened, but here we are. ANYWAY. The first 5 mentoring slots have been assigned and booked, and I'm so stoked to get to work with such a diverse mix of freelancers at different points in their journey. I'm going to be opening up a limited number of slots each month, so if you want to grab a spot over the next couple of months, add your name to this list. Also, just a reminder that I’m officially retiring Pitch &...

Hi Reader, Happy Friday! I'm currently working through the 40 applications I got for 1:1 mentoring sessions 😱 bear with me if you applied, I'll get back to you ASAP! In the meantime... there's something I've been putting off. I’m officially retiring Pitch & Prosper. This was my very first “official” resource, and it’s now helped over 500 freelancers stop scrambling on job boards and start landing clients they actually want to work with. And honestly, the warm pitching method I teach in it has...
