The best thing freelancing has given me (and it's not freedom

Hi Reader,

Happy Friday!

I'm currently working through the 40 applications I got for 1:1 mentoring sessions 😱 bear with me if you applied, I'll get back to you ASAP!

In the meantime... there's something I've been putting off.

I’m officially retiring Pitch & Prosper.

This was my very first “official” resource, and it’s now helped over 500 freelancers stop scrambling on job boards and start landing clients they actually want to work with.

And honestly, the warm pitching method I teach in it has never been more valuable. In a landscape where LinkedIn callouts feel like a race to the bottom and Upwork is looking more apocalyptic by the day, knowing how to build relationships and pitch the right clients is a total game-changer.

I built this system when I was working 14-hour days for £20 blog posts and saying yes to nightmare clients out of fear. It’s also how I eventually went from £20 to £850+ a piece (yep, that was my answer when Metro asked me about it last month!).

And now, for this final round, I’m pairing the course with a month-long pitching challenge and a private group, so we can end the year strong and head into 2026 with thriving, joy-filled businesses.

Get £50 and join us now before the doors close on Oct 12th.

P.S. This week on Instagram, I shared how to get bigger clients in your freelance business. Find out here. And don't forget to give me a follow for regular tips and tricks!

Here's what I've been up to this week work-wise:

👉 I wrote 2 pieces for a new client

👉 I refreshed 1 piece for Shopify

👉 I had 2 discovery calls with potential new clients

👉 I had my yearly finance meeting

👉 I started going through all the mentoring applications

⏱ Approx hours spent on client work this week: ~12

⏱ Approx hours spent on non-client work: ~5

💰 Total revenue this week: £2,050

What I learned from sharing my income with the world

In the latest episode of It’s Fine, I’m a Freelancer, I’m unpacking the Metro article that shared my income as a freelance writer.

I’ll walk you through the assumptions people made about my success, the realities behind those income figures, and what the conversation revealed about freelancing stereotypes, privilege, AI, and the industries we work in.

Friday Freelance Tip ✨

This week, I was a guest on the New Kind Community private podcast, and honestly, it was such a great chat.

Kim and I talked about my freelancing journey, the ups and downs, and what it’s like to look back and actually see how far I’ve come.

And that got me thinking: what’s the very best thing freelancing has given me?

It’s not the freedom (although, let’s be real, choosing my own hours and taking midweek naps is still a win). It’s not even the money, the flexibility, or the fact that I no longer have to sit in pointless meetings.

The best thing freelancing has given me is confidence.

The real, unshakable kind of confidence that comes from having evidence that when I put my mind to something, I can make it happen.

That didn’t exist before freelancing.

Back in my 9–5 days, I had ideas but not much faith in myself. I’d wait for someone else’s approval. I’d always tell myself maybe one day (and you know how that goes). But freelancing forced me to stop waiting. I had no choice but to figure things out one client at a time.

And little by little, I built a track record. Proof that I could do scary, hard, ambitious things... AND succeed at them.

Now, when I get a new idea, my first thought isn’t that’s too hard. It’s okay, how do we make this work?

That shift is the most valuable thing freelancing has given me. It bleeds into everything, including business, life, the way I approach problems. I trust myself now in a way I never did before.

If I were starting freelancing all over again, I’d lean into that messy, experimental side even more. I’d throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks. Try things and scrap 'em. Test different ways of working until I found what fit me best.

That's really what it's all about, right?! There's no "right way" to freelance. We're all just running little experiments until we find the version of freelancing that works for us.

Some ideas will flop (I’ve had plenty). Others will take off in ways you didn’t expect. But the point isn’t to get it “right” from day one, it’s to give yourself enough shots that you can start building up that evidence (a.k.a the proof that you can do hard things).

And once you have that proof, no one can take it away from you.

That’s the real win.

We need more Freelance Money Diaries entries! I'm forever grateful to anyone who shares their finances with us (you can do it totally anonymously!).

As always, happy freelancing :)
